大多數直埋電纜都按照特定的耐熱性、耐濕性、導電性和土壤酸鹼度要求製造。與僅有薄薄絕緣層和防水外層的標準通信電纜和電力電纜不同，直埋電纜由多層厚重的金屬帶護套構成，並由厚橡膠護套、減震凝膠、纏繞加固的防水膠帶以及重金屬芯加固。
